Video cameras with FTP, SFTP, and direct file delivery

A source-backed guide to Sony, JVC, Panasonic, Canon, Nikon, RED, Blackmagic, Fujifilm, and other cameras that move recorded clips, proxies, or originals.

The short answer

Recorded-video FTP is strongest on Sony Connected CAM/XDCAM, JVC connected camcorders, and Panasonic P2/CX bodies. Canon EOS R3-class and Nikon Z8/Z9 bodies can send video to open FTP-family servers, but the documented workflow is manual after the take. RED, Blackmagic, LUMIX, Fujifilm, Leica, Atomos, and Teradek add vendor-cloud, S3, or gateway paths with different proxy/original behavior.1,2,4,5,6,7

“Video camera with FTP” can describe four different architectures.

An open-server camera sends a recorded clip to a hostname the operator chooses. A vendor-cloud camera sends to a fixed service. A phone bridge relays camera media through an app. An HDMI/SDI gateway records a new proxy and uploads that representation.

Only the first architecture guarantees that the camera menu can point directly at a destination-neutral FTP-family endpoint. The others can still feed an open workflow, but through a provider API, customer storage, or an intermediate device.

Background upload rarely means the current take is already remote.

Most cameras close a clip before it can be uploaded. “Upload while recording” often means the previous closed clip transfers while the camera records the next one.

Current-take delivery is documented more narrowly: Sony Z200/NX800 and newer Connected CAM models create timed proxy chunks; JVC HC500/550/900 can divide and transfer web recordings; Blackmagic URSA Cine supports Live Sync; and Atomos documents progressive transfer. Each sends a derivative or segments rather than exposing an unfinished camera original.1,2,3,8,9

A video-capable camera with FTP may still have a stills-only automatic path.

Canon’s R3 documentation says movies are selected after recording and automatic movie transfer is not supported. Nikon’s Z8/Z9 automatic FTP function is for still photos; video transfer is manual. Sony Transfer & Tagging is a stills workflow even though supported Sony bodies may have separate movie FTP firmware.5,6,10

Blackmagic PYXIS specifications also require a directionality check: its FTP feature can expose camera media for client download, while outbound cloud upload uses Blackmagic Cloud. An FTP server in a camera is not the same as an FTP client that pushes to a remote endpoint.11

Compatibility belongs to a route, not only a camera body.

The same camera may have a native FTP route, a vendor-cloud route, and an external-recorder route with different files and timing.

Payload identity

Original, camera proxy, phone-imported file, or external HDMI/SDI recording.

Protocol and timing

FTP/FTPES/FTPS/SFTP/S3/provider API plus manual, automatic, background, or chunked behavior.

Requirements

Firmware, network transport, phone, transmitter, recorder, card mode, service account, and region.

Editorial evidence

Filename, timecode, record trigger, codec, frame rate, checksum, and retry behavior.

Frequently asked questions

Can Nikon Z8 and Z9 upload video over FTP?

Yes, current documentation supports manual post-take video upload and includes RAW-video companion-file choices. Automatic FTP upload remains still-photo-only.6

Can Canon EOS cameras automatically FTP video after every take?

Do not assume so. The EOS R3 manual says movie transfer is manual after recording and automatic movie transfer is not supported. Verify every other body against its exact manual.5

Which cameras have the strongest open video FTP workflow?

Sony professional camcorders, JVC connected camcorders, and Panasonic P2/CX bodies have the most complete documented open-server behavior. Exact payloads, secure protocols, automation, and during-record options vary by model.1,2,4
