Frame.io Camera to Cloud vs Blackmagic Cloud: where each workflow begins and ends

Compare camera support, proxy and original delivery, review, NLE handoff, Live Sync, local storage synchronization, and ecosystem boundaries.

Published · 11 min read

The short answer

Frame.io is the broader cross-vendor review and collaboration destination, with native camera integrations and external recorder/encoder partners. Blackmagic Cloud provides the tighter Resolve-centered loop: supported Blackmagic cameras and the mobile app can sync proxies and originals into Cloud projects, folders, and DaVinci Resolve. Choose by camera fleet, editorial system, and ownership path—not by upload speed alone.1,2,3

Frame.io centers the project; Blackmagic centers the Resolve production loop.

Frame.io pairs supported cameras and devices to a project. Native integrations may send camera proxies or originals; external devices such as Teradek and Atomos record a new proxy from the camera output.1

Compatible Blackmagic cameras and the Blackmagic Camera app can upload proxies only or proxies plus originals to a Cloud project, Cloud Folder, or personal storage. Queued files resume after a connection returns, and users can defer selected originals until a better network is available.2

Blackmagic Live Sync is file synchronization during recording—not ordinary livestreaming.

In Blackmagic’s workflow, a small proxy can enter the Resolve project while the camera is still recording, allowing editorial work to begin before the take ends. Cameras that also support SRT or RTMP use a separate live-output path.3,4

Frame.io also supports workflows that accelerate editorial access, but the exact arrival timing depends on whether the source is a native camera, an external recorder, or a chunked/growing-file implementation.

Choose the system that reduces handoffs after the upload.

The fastest upload can still create a slow production if the editor must manually rebuild folders, find originals, or repair clip identity.

Choose Frame.io

For mixed-camera productions, broad review workflows, Adobe collaboration, or supported external recorder/encoder paths.

Choose Blackmagic Cloud

For Blackmagic/Resolve teams that want camera sync, shared project organization, and proxy/original storage behavior in one ecosystem.

Use both carefully

Define which platform owns review, which owns editorial organization, and which storage contains the recoverable original.

Keep an independent archive

Neither a review proxy nor a queued cloud copy replaces verified local media and a tested backup policy.

Frequently asked questions

Is Blackmagic Live Sync a livestream?

No. It synchronizes proxy media into a cloud/Resolve workflow while recording. Separate SRT or RTMP functions handle continuous live video on supported cameras.3,4

Does Frame.io always receive original camera files?

No. Payload varies by integration. RED can send originals; current Canon Cinema EOS integrations are proxy-oriented; external encoders create a new recording from HDMI or SDI.1,5,6

Which is better for DaVinci Resolve?

Blackmagic Cloud provides the most direct first-party loop into Resolve. Frame.io may still be preferable when cross-vendor capture and review collaboration matter more than a vertically integrated Resolve path.3
