Frame.io alternatives in 2026: pick by the job, capture or review

Frame.io alternatives compared by job: camera to cloud for FTP bodies, client review, approval and media management. Where Frame.io still wins.

Published · Updated · 11 min read

The short answer

There is no single Frame.io substitute, because Frame.io does two jobs: it gets media off the set (Camera to Cloud) and it runs review and approval. For capture from a camera that only has a built-in FTP menu, or for files that must land in storage the client owns, use an FTP-family router such as Camera to Anywhere. For client review, start with Dropbox Replay, Vimeo or Wipster. For Resolve-centred review, use Blackmagic Cloud Presentations. For formal multi-stage approval, look at Filestage or Ziflow, and for a long-lived media library, iconik. If your team already reviews in Frame.io and cuts in Premiere Pro, Frame.io is still the shorter road.1,2,5,6,7,8,9,10,11

Where Frame.io is the right choice

Frame.io is a review and approval platform that grew a capture story. If your notes, versions and approvals already live there, moving capture into the same place removes a handoff, and that is worth real money on a series.

Camera to Cloud is included on every Frame.io plan, including the free one, so the cost question is about seats and storage rather than about unlocking the feature.1

If you are cutting in Premiere Pro and your producer lives in Frame.io comments, stop reading. The integration is the product and nothing here beats it on that ground.

Three limits that send people looking

None of these are faults. They are the shape of the product, and each one is a reason a particular job does not fit it.

C2C wants a listed integration, not any camera

Frame.io C2C is a set of named integrations. Native camera integrations currently come from RED, Fujifilm, Panasonic LUMIX, Canon, Nikon and Leica, on specific bodies and firmware. Other cameras need an external encoder or recorder from Teradek, Atomos or Accsoon. A built-in FTP menu alone does not make a camera a C2C device.2,3

Seats are capped per plan, not only priced

Free allows 2 members, Pro allows 5 at $15 per member per month, and Team allows 15 at $25 per member per month, billed monthly. A crew that briefly needs a sixteenth person is an Enterprise conversation, not an extra seat.1

Mounted storage is a separate, smaller quota

Mounted Storage has its own quota, separate from standard storage: 2 GB on Free, 250 GB on Pro and 500 GB on Team, against 2 TB and 3 TB of standard storage on Pro and Team. Your existing library does not become mountable because you installed Frame.io Drive.1,4

Getting files off the set: what each option is for

Prices checked September 2026. Frame.io plan prices and limits on this page were checked on 23 September 2026 against Adobe’s own pricing and help pages. Treat any figure older than a quarter as needing a recheck.1

The case Frame.io does not cover: your camera already has FTP

Most modern hybrid and press bodies ship an FTP client in the menu. It was built to reach one server, so it sends to one place, and the job usually needs more than one.

That is the gap this site exists for. Camera to Anywhere is an FTP, FTPS and SFTP endpoint your camera can already talk to with nothing installed. It checks the file it received, then copies it to every destination on the job at once and keeps a receipt for each copy.

The practical difference is who owns the destination. Frame.io keeps the media in Frame.io. A destination-neutral route puts a copy in the client’s Dropbox, the agency’s Google Drive and your own NAS on the same upload, without the camera knowing any of them exist.

Camera to Anywhere is not a review tool. It has no time-coded comments and no approval states. If review is what you are replacing, read the next section.

Replacing Frame.io review: choose by the decision your team makes

Most people who search for a Frame.io alternative want the review half: a client approving a cut, a team commenting on versions, a legal or brand group signing off a campaign. Those are different jobs, and the products below are each built for one of them.

Dropbox Replay and Vimeo both offer time-coded comments, version history and approvals. Replay has integrations for Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, After Effects and Pro Tools. Vimeo lets guests comment without a Vimeo account and syncs comments with Premiere Pro.5,6

Wipster offers frame-accurate comments, side-by-side version comparison and panels for Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro and After Effects. Blackmagic Cloud Presentations sends reviewers’ markers and comments straight onto the DaVinci Resolve timeline.7,8

Filestage and Ziflow are built for staged approval across many formats, not only video: reviewer groups in sequence on Filestage, automated routing on Ziflow. iconik is a media asset management platform with review built in, which suits a library that outlives any single project.9,10,11

Test reviewer friction and exit paths, not only upload speed

A fair trial uses the same cut, the same reviewers, the same security needs and the same final handoff in each platform. Do not score every vendor against one giant feature grid: a product can be the better dailies room and the worse marketing approval system at the same time.

Guests

Count clicks, account requirements, mobile behaviour and notification noise for an outside reviewer.

Decisions

Test time-coded comments, drawings, versions, approval states and the export back to your editing app.

Security

Check passwords, link expiry, download controls, watermarking, SSO, audit history and data residency.

Exit

Confirm how originals, comments, versions, metadata and approval history leave the platform.

A short way to choose

Ask who needs the file. If the answer is your own post team, and they live in Adobe tools, Frame.io is the shorter road.

If the answer is two or more parties who each want it in their own storage, a destination-neutral route is fewer moving pieces than one platform plus a set of manual re-uploads.

If the answer is one client and one folder, the camera maker’s own app may be all you need, and it costs nothing extra.

If the file is already where it needs to be and the question is who approves it, pick the review tool that matches the approval chain, and let capture stay separate.

Frequently asked questions

Is Frame.io Camera to Cloud free?

C2C is included on every plan, including the free tier, which allows 2 members and 2 GB of storage. The cost comes from seats and storage rather than from the feature itself.1

Can I use Frame.io C2C with a normal mirrorless camera?

Only if that body has a listed native integration or you add an external device from Teradek, Atomos or Accsoon. A built-in FTP menu alone does not make a camera a C2C device.2,3

What is the closest simple alternative to Frame.io for client review?

Dropbox Replay, Vimeo and Wipster are the usual starting points. The best fit depends on where your files already live and which editing app your team uses.5,6,7

Is LucidLink a Frame.io alternative?

Not for review and approval. LucidLink streams shared files to editors. A separate product still handles comments and sign-off.13

What replaced the Frame.io Transfer app?

Frame.io Drive replaces it. Adobe states both are supported during a transition period, and Drive is a separate download rather than an update to Transfer.4

Do I have to choose one or the other?

No. A destination-neutral ingest can list Frame.io as one destination among several, so review keeps happening where the producer expects while the client and the archive get their own copies.
