The short answer

DeadlineFTP is built for a remote editor: a live web gallery with crop, caption codes, voice notes and FTP export to the wire, from $12.99 a month. It accepts camera uploads over plain FTP only and deletes photos after 24 hours. If you need encrypted camera upload, video, or delivery straight into Google Drive, OneDrive, Box or a NAS, Camera to Anywhere does that, with no charge for the first 20 GB delivered each month.1,2,4,6

DeadlineFTP puts the frame in front of an editor while you are still shooting.

The camera uploads to DeadlineFTP, the frame appears in a web gallery, and an editor can search, caption with Quick Text codes, crop, adjust exposure and send it on over FTP or SFTP, including to wire services, by hand or automatically per gallery. Voice notes are transcribed into captions. A Mac app downloads to a local folder.3,2

Browser crop and per-gallery wire export are real strengths for news and agency work. Camera to Anywhere does not edit or caption images.

Plain FTP in, 24 hours of storage, and each camera login counts as a user.

DeadlineFTP’s camera guides say it works with unencrypted FTP, and tell owners of FTPS and SFTP cameras to switch the camera to FTP. Photos are deleted 24 hours after upload. An extra FTP login, such as a second body for one photographer, counts as one more user against the plan.4,2,1

Camera to Anywhere accepts FTP, explicit FTPS and SFTP. It also keeps frames only long enough to deliver and retry; the difference is that delivery goes to storage you already keep, so nothing has to be downloaded again before it expires.6,7

One is an editing desk. The other is a delivery route.

They overlap at the moment the camera sends. After that, DeadlineFTP keeps the frame in its gallery for an editor; Camera to Anywhere hands verified copies to the destinations named for that job.

Stay with DeadlineFTP for a wire desk. Look elsewhere for an archive.

If an editor crops and captions in the browser and pushes to AP or Reuters, DeadlineFTP is purpose-built for that. If the job ends in a client’s cloud folder, an editor’s Frame.io project, or your own NAS, a delivery route fits better, and it can run beside DeadlineFTP from the same shoot.

Your policy forbids plain FTP

If an agency, team or venue does not allow unencrypted logins, send SFTP or FTPS straight from a body that supports it.8
